Norwalk Restaurants Boost Takeout and Delivery Amid Coronavirus Closures

Norwalk Restaurants Boost Takeout and Delivery Amid Coronavirus Closures

Statewide, dining in is prohibited until further notice, per executive order by Governor Lamont, in an effort to curb COVID-19. Takeout and delivery are still permitted, however, which provides some opportunity for restaurants to recoup their losses.  Some are going for it, others are not, and still others are offering specials, promotions, and discounts to attract customers.

Regardless, all restaurants are overstaffed for the reduced demand, and workers are braced for drastic cuts to their hours and layoffs. These are family-owned, minority-owned, women-owned businesses that need your support during this time of economic uncertainty. If you have the means and feel safe to do so, please order food or purchase a gift card where possible.

Below is a list of GNHCC member restaurants and a description of how they are adapting their business to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Because the situation is very fluid and changes are happening daily, this list is updated to the best of our knowledge, but if you are unsure, please call ahead.

Breakfast Before Business at Avenida Venezuelan

Breakfast Before Business at Avenida Venezuelan

July’s Breakfast Before Business was the most delicious to date! Our host was Avenida Venezuelan Food, a fast casual restaurant serving traditional Venezuelan food for breakfast and lunch. It also happened to fall on the day, one year ago, when the restaurant first opened its doors. We were honored to be included in the celebration.

About Breakfast Before Business

Breakfast Before Business is all about breaking out of your regular routine. Rather than starting your day alone at a computer, you could start it mixing and mingling with GNHCC members and friends. We guarantee that you’ll leave with a boost of inspiration and energy to put toward achieving your dreams!

This is not a members-only event and there is not cost to attend. We welcome all business owners and professionals serving the Greater Norwalk area.

Breakfast Before Business will return in the fall. Stay tuned for upcoming dates!

La Calle Arepas Bar Turns 1

La Calle Arepas Bar Turns 1

Happy Birthday, La Calle Arepas Bar! Thank you for throwing a delicious, lively, and inspiring celebration!

One year ago, Javier Eastman acted on his dream, opening a cool and casual restaurant that serves the everyday food of his hometown, El Vigia, Venezuela. He wears his love for Venezuela on his sleeve, and translates it to the plate. La Calle uses only the most authentic ingredients: masarepa flour, plantains, and Venezuelan sodas, to name a few; and all dessert recipes come from Javier’s mother. The restaurant values family and treats customers like family.

We are so proud to have Javier as a GNHCC member, representing La Calle and his two other businesses, Avenida Venezuelan Food and Causality Tattoo Company.

Among this year’s recipients is GNHCC Board member Katia Garcon.

This year’s event included a new minimalist twist: the honorees were asked to describe themselves in speeches consisting only of three words. Katia provoked applause with her sassy three-word announcement:

Rene Soto Honored with CT Arts Hero Award

Rene Soto Honored with CT Arts Hero Award

To honor and celebrate individuals who are doing extraordinary things in, for and through the arts, the Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) established the Connecticut Arts Hero Awards in 2016.

This year, nine artists were honored with this prestigious award, including GNHCC board member Rene Soto. The awards were presented as part of COA’s annual Connecticut Arts Day, an annual event designed to inform, inspire and celebrate Connecticut’s investment in the arts.

All Connecticut Arts Heroes were presented with a framed print of the original art — Small State, Big Heart, Great Art —which was created by Hartford Prints! for the Connecticut Office of the Arts. See Rene posing with his print in the image gallery below.

“I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people.”
